Sutton's U15's completed a fantastic double triumph by winning the JPL Cup at Bodymoor Heath on Saturday afternoon, having been confirmed as JPL league winners earlier in the week to cap a fine season. Though it's not over yet as they now go on to compete in next Saturdays' JPL 'Champion of Champions' Finals which brings together league winners nationally from all Divisions.
In a game which was very tight until the last 10 minutes when goals from Ryan Anderson and Kyron Regis-Cooper sealed the win, following an absolute 'worldy' of a first half goal from Sam Ball. Sutton started well and got a deserved goal after some good approach play in the middle from Burgess, Siddhu and Brogan, that saw Ball pick up a good pass before lashing it from outside the box into the top corner!
Mansfield came back strong in the second half; but Suttons defence was well marshalled by Dutton, Hughes and Young, with Puller dropping back to make the extra man ensuring we held firm, with goalkeeper Charlie McNab pulling off some fine saves when they did break through.
Everyone was having to put in a real shift with Ball and Wood tracking up and down the wide positions, as Mansfield continued to dictate more of the play. Eventually, Sutton started to get hold of the ball with Burgess particularly looking to drive forward and take the game to the opposition. Crook was always looking to get in behind the Mansfield defence and join up with substitute striker Regis-Cooper.
Fresh legs were required on an energy sapping afternoon, with Callum Shermer-Hull and Ryan Anderson taking over the wide positions and Alex Diaz joining Regis-Cooper up front. As the game entered the final 10 minutes, Mansfield were caught chasing an equaliser and in a swift counter attack, Anderson latched onto a through ball before slotting home to calm everyones nerves. All credit to Mansfield who kept pushing forward, but were caught out again when Regis-Cooper received the ball from Diaz before turning the defender and burying it in the bottom corner, to the delight of players, coaches, and parent supporters. Supporters included many onlooking officials from the club including Chairman, General Manager and First Team Manager, plus U21 and U18 Mangers, together with members of Suttons' Ultras, unfortunately without accompaniment, as their instruments were regrettably banned!
The 3-0 scoreline probably flattered Sutton a little; but they played when they had the ball and worked hard without it. In the end Cup Finals are often won by teams who have a bit of luck on the day; but who also take their chances when they get them.....and Sutton managed both today!
Well done to all the boys in the squad, including Anas Ahmed and Taylor Walker, for they all played their part in previous rounds right through to the semi-final to help get the team into todays JPL Final.
Good luck in next weeks JPL Champions Finals....could a possible TREBLE be on the cards? Either way its been a truly magnificent effort this season!
