Mark Sanders reports on a strong away performance in Oxfordshire

On a mild day In Thame, Sutton Coldfield Town took on Thame United at the Meadow View Park Stadium. Last time out Thame beat Sutton 4-1 so today the lads had the chance to even the score.

Only a few changes to the side who lost to Bromsgrove Sporting with Hurst in for the injured Curtis and Delaney in for McNulty. The game started at a slow sluggish pace with both teams testing each other out.

George drew a foul for Sutton, the free kick was taken by Nesbitt who put a great ball into the box for Hurst to rise highest but the ball went just wide. Clarke headed the ball from midfield out to Letford who ran into the box, side stepped his man but sadly scuffed his shot with the goal beckoning so the keeper collected it easily.

Ben George ran the wing, passed a lovely ball to Nesbitt who delivered a ball into the box, but no one from Sutton gambled and the opportunity went begging. Thame came close with an effort from Mepham whose shot was blocked by the Sutton defence, Thame got a corner and the in swinger was headed just over the bar by Jamie Essex. This was the closest Thame had come to scoring in the game.

Sutton broke through the Thame defence again with Nesbitt laying a great ball through to Letford, but his run had taken him offside. On 37 minutes Sutton made the break through when George, who was full of running received another foul, Nesbitt again delivered a sweet ball into the box for new boy Hurst to rise above the Thame defence again, only this time his header went into the top corner for Suttons first goal of the game. GOAL! 0:1

Letford made another darting run in the 40th minute, beating his man and putting the ball on a plate for Moore to test the keeper; Clayton made a diving save to his left to keep Sutton out. Just before half time Letford won the ball in the opposition’s half; he twisted his man inside and out and left him in a heap on the floor as he ran into the box to deliver a ball to Nesbitt who calmly fired passed Clayton GOAL! 0:2 Sutton were on cloud 9 to take this score line into half time and it was just what they deserved.

Thame started the second half as you would expect with a much-improved tempo. They had a few efforts towards the Sutton goal, but nothing really clean cut. A free kick on 50 minutes saw Thame go close as Essex headed the ball over the bar.

Nesbitt ran down the wing minutes later, turned inside the fullback and shot towards goal but sadly on this occasion, straight at the keeper. Just before the hour mark Sutton make a change with Letford coming off for Max McNulty. Delaney created and great chance on the hour as he took the ball to the by-line, turned the ball back into the box for George to hit a volley just over the bar.

Sutton kept pushing not content to sit back on a 2-0 lead. Nesbitt hit a volley which was blocked and cleared, George then won another free kick and Nesbitt put a ball in for McNulty to head against the keeper. It was on 75 minutes when Sutton finally made the game theirs. George put a cross into the box for an unmarked McNulty to head against the post and into the net GOAL! 3:0.

Hearsey and Moore came on late but the game was well and truly over by then, Thame only had half a chance with Cullen hitting the side netting. Today was a good away win for the Royals with a few goals in the bag as well. Thame were poor today, a shadow of the team that played us on the opening day of the season. But then we all have off days don’t we.

Our next game is at home against Didcot Town and it’s on New Year’s Day at 15:00. Let’s hope you can join us in supporting the lads to get back to back wins, and a real chance for a promotion
